Ishikawa · Kanazawa · Autumn 2026
Kenrokuen’s autumn colour usually runs from early to late November. On 11 October 2026 the Japan Weather Association forecast early to late November for 2026, and Weathernews expected the peak from about 22 November, with leaves starting to fall from about 5 December. The garden is lit up, free, on seven November evenings: 7, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29 November, 18:00–21:00. The Kanazawa City Tourism Association gives 1 November as the usual start of the yukitsuri rope work; the 2026 date was not in the prefecture’s October press-release list when we checked on 11 October.

When are Kenrokuen’s autumn leaves best in 2026?
The Japan Weather Association (JWA, which runs tenki.jp) gives each spot a window; Weathernews gives the day it expects the peak to start and the day leaves start falling. How the two work is explained in who forecasts Japan’s autumn colours.
| Source | What it says (read 11 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Japan Weather Association, 2026 | Early to late November. Status on 11 October: still green |
| Weathernews, 2026 | Peak from about 22 November; leaves start falling from about 5 December |
| Usual timing | Early to late November (Kanazawa City Tourism Association, tenki.jp and Weathernews) |
| Garden office, 2025 (not a 2026 forecast) | 15 November 2025: the area around Kasumigaike pond at its best; 20 November 2025: colour at its best across the garden |
JWA’s first national forecast for 2026 (1 October) expects colour around normal or later than normal, and later than normal in places on the plains of eastern and western Japan, because it expects temperatures to stay above normal through October and November. Its Hokuriku table lists only Yahiko Park, so it says nothing directly about Kenrokuen against its own normal.
tenki.jp lists maple, cherry and zelkova among the trees that colour here, and says the maples planted on Yamazaki-yama hill and on Horai Island in Kasumigaike turn red and yellow. The tourism association singles out the view from Yamazaki-yama, near the Kodatsuno gate; Weathernews names Yamazaki-yama, the Kotoji lantern by Kasumigaike, and Hisago-ike pond. Both forecasters update through the season, so check again in the week before you go.

When do the yukitsuri ropes go up at Kenrokuen?
Yukitsuri (雪吊り, “snow hanging”) are the ropes the gardeners tie to protect branches from the weight of wet Hokuriku snow. The Kanazawa City Tourism Association’s autumn guide gives 1 November as the start and mid-December as the end. Whether 2026 follows that is not confirmed yet: the prefecture’s October press-release list, last updated 9 October 2026 and checked on 11 October, had no yukitsuri notice. The 2025 notice was dated 27 October 2025. Note that 1 November 2026 is a Sunday.
What the 2025 notice and the garden office’s 2025 posts said, so you know what to look for in the 2026 one:
- The notice scheduled the work to start on Saturday 1 November 2025 at 9:00, beginning with the Karasaki pine (唐崎松), which gets five central poles and about 800 ropes. If it rained, lower trees would go first and the Karasaki pine would move to 4 November.
- On the day, the garden office posted that the Karasaki pine was postponed to 4 November or later for the workers’ safety, while work on lower trees went ahead.
- The notice listed 50 “apple” (cone-shaped) yukitsuri, 59 trunk-style ones and about 700 other places, using about 4,000 kg of straw rope, with the work due to end in mid-December.
- On 15 November 2025 the office posted that the work was being done on weekdays until around mid-December.
For the Karasaki pine, the office’s diary scheduled removal for Monday 23 March 2026, weather permitting.

Kenrokuen autumn light-up 2026: dates, times and what is lit
The autumn light-up, “Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Shiki Monogatari: Autumn” (金沢城・兼六園四季物語~秋の段~), is organised by Ishikawa Prefecture’s tourism campaign. Its 2026 listing and flyer say:
Dates
Saturday 7, Saturday 14, Sunday 15, Saturday 21, Sunday 22, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November 2026. A September round was scheduled for 19–22 September.
Times and entry
18:00–21:00 in November, last entry 20:45, free while the lights are on. The garden closes for an hour before each light-up to prepare. It may be cancelled or changed in bad weather.
What is lit
In Kenrokuen, the Kotoji lantern, the Karasaki pine and the fountain, among others. In Kanazawa Castle Park, Ishikawa-mon gate, Gyokusen’inmaru garden, Kahoku-mon gate, Hishi-yagura turret and Nezumitamon gate. How much of the yukitsuri is up on a given night depends on how far the rope work has got.
Concerts
Performances of about 15 minutes at Uchihashi-tei pavilion, which can be watched from around Kasumigaike, at 18:15 and 19:00: a string quartet on 7 and 14 November, flute and koto on 21 November, shamisen on 28 November.
The organisers’ map marks the evening entrances to Kenrokuen at the Renchimon, Mayumizaka and Kodatsuno gates; Katsurazaka is not marked. The area around the Kotoji lantern is one-way because it gets very crowded. The organisers ask visitors not to use tripods in the garden or on the bridges, and some areas are closed, so follow the signs on the night.

Opening hours, fees and free early entry
| Period | Kenrokuen hours (official page, 11 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| 1 March – 15 October | 7:00–18:00, last entry 17:30 |
| 16 October – end of February | 8:00–17:00, last entry 16:30 |
| Free early entry, 16–31 October | 5:00–7:45, last entry 7:30 |
| Free early entry, 1 November – end of February | 6:00–7:45, last entry 7:30 |
The garden is open every day of the year. Admission is ¥320 for adults (18 and over) and ¥100 for ages 6 to 17. The Japanese page exempts visitors aged 65 and over who show official ID; the English page says to show your passport. 3 November (Culture Day) is listed as a free-entry day, and the office says it announces the details about a week before.
Early entry is free, but only the Renchimon and Zuishinzaka gates are open, and you must be out 15 minutes before paid hours start, so by 7:45 in November. Kanazawa Castle Park, next door, also has free early opening.
The two official pages disagree on payment. The Japanese page lists credit cards, transport IC cards such as Suica and ICOCA, and PayPay; the English page says cash only. Don’t count on paying by card: bring enough cash for everyone’s admission.
How busy is Kenrokuen in November?
The official pages we checked on 11 October 2026 give no crowd forecasts or queue times. Weathernews’ Kenrokuen listing gives about 260,000 visitors for the season, without saying which year. What the calendar tells you:
- 3 November (Tuesday) is a public holiday and listed as a free-entry day.
- 21–23 November is a three-day weekend (Monday 23 November is a holiday). Weathernews’ peak-start date of about 22 November and two light-up evenings fall inside it.
- All seven November light-up dates fall on Saturdays or Sundays.
Our suggestion, not a source’s: if your dates are flexible, aim for a weekday, and use the free early entry, which in November runs from 6:00 to 7:45.
Getting to Kanazawa from Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka
From Tokyo: the Hokuriku Shinkansen
The fastest trains on the Hokuriku Shinkansen are the Kagayaki. JR East’s weekday timetable for autumn 2026 (read 11 October 2026) shows 20 Kagayaki departure times from Tokyo. Ten run every day (6:16, 7:20, 8:11, 9:20, 10:22, 16:24, 17:24, 18:24, 20:00 and 21:04); the other ten run only on listed dates. They take 2 h 24 min to 2 h 41 min to Kanazawa. All Kagayaki seats are reserved, so book a seat before you board. The Hakutaka also runs to Kanazawa and has some unreserved seats, but is slower: the 6:28 from Tokyo reaches Kanazawa at 9:32. We read the weekday table only, so check the timetable for your own date, including weekends.
The Japan Rail Pass covers the Hokuriku Shinkansen, including the Kagayaki, and the pass site says holders can book reserved seats. Gran Class needs the limited express charge and the Gran Class charge on top, and the TRAIN DESK cars are not covered. On the official site a 7-day ordinary pass costs ¥50,000 bought online. Whether it pays for itself depends on the rest of your trip; the sums are in JR Pass vs individual tickets.
If the pass pays on your route, it covers Tokyo–Kanazawa on the Kagayaki. The price and terms on the linked page may differ from the official site’s.
See the Japan Rail Pass on KlookFrom Kyoto or Osaka: change at Tsuruga
The Thunderbird limited express from Osaka and Kyoto runs to Tsuruga, where you change to the Hokuriku Shinkansen for Kanazawa. The Kanazawa City Tourism Association gives about 1 h 20 min from Osaka to Tsuruga and about 40 minutes from Tsuruga to Kanazawa. In JR West’s timetable for 11 November 2026, Shinkansen trains from Tsuruga reach Kanazawa in 40 to 59 minutes, depending on the train. Total time depends on the connection you get at Tsuruga. The Japan Rail Pass covers both trains.
JR West also sells a HOKURIKU One-way Ticket (Thunderbird plus Hokuriku Shinkansen): ¥6,500 from Kyoto or ¥8,000 from Osaka to Kanazawa for adults. Its page says the holder must have a passport issued by a foreign government and be entering Japan as a “Temporary Visitor”, that Japanese nationals cannot use it, and that it cannot be bought in Japan.
From Kanazawa Station to the garden
The Kanazawa Loop Bus leaves from Kanazawa Station East Gate, stop 7. The right-hand loop runs about every 15 minutes from 8:30 to 18:00 and reaches the Kenrokuen-shita/Kanazawa-jo stop (opposite Ishikawa-mon) in 18 minutes; the left-hand loop runs about every 20 minutes and takes 27 minutes. A ride costs ¥220 for adults, and Hokuriku Railroad’s one-day pass costs ¥800 (it is not sold on the bus). From the stop, the garden’s Katsurazaka gate (daytime) is about a 5-minute walk, according to the prefecture. The tourism association gives about 15 minutes and from ¥1,800 for a taxi from the station.
Weather and what to wear in November
Kanazawa is wetter than Tokyo in November. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s 1991–2020 normals give Kanazawa 250.8 mm of rain in November, against 96.3 mm for Tokyo, and 108.6 hours of sunshine against 149.8. Average temperatures are close: a mean of 11.9°C in Kanazawa (highs of 15.9°C, lows of 8.1°C) and 12.5°C in Tokyo.
The tourism association suggests a jacket or sweater with a coat in late October and early November, and winter coats, down jackets and boots by late November, when it says there are days with thunder and sleet. Kanazawa City lends umbrellas free at about 20 places, including the Kanazawa Station Tourist Information Centre. For layers and light-up evenings, see what to wear in Japan in November.
Where to stay for Kenrokuen in autumn
The tourism association says almost all of Kanazawa’s main sights are within 2 km of Kanazawa Castle, and lists places to stay by area, including the Kanazawa Station area, the Kenrokuen area and the Korinbo area.
Kanazawa Station area
Where the Shinkansen and the Loop Bus start. The bus stop by the garden is 18 minutes away on the right-hand loop, then about a 5-minute walk; a taxi takes about 15 minutes.
Kenrokuen and Korinbo side
Nearer the garden and the castle park, which matters for the 6:00 early entry and for light-up nights that end at 21:00. Korinbo is a stop on both loops. Check the map for the hotel’s location before you book.
Pick the side of town that fits your mornings and evenings, then search your dates.
See Kanazawa stays on Booking.comCombining Kenrokuen with Kanazawa Castle, Shirakawa-go and Kyoto
Kanazawa Castle Park is next to Kenrokuen. The tourism association gives its autumn colour as early to mid-November, with maples against the stone walls and beech trees turning yellow around the Honmaru garden. It is lit during the light-up and also has early opening.

For a longer trip: Shirakawa-go is about 1 h 15 min from Kanazawa by highway bus, according to the tourism association, and our guide covers the visit and its winter light-up. Tateyama Murodo is an earlier-season trip in the same region; see Tateyama Murodo in autumn. If you are going on to Kyoto, Kyoto in November has its booking rules and crowd timing; for the whole month, see Japan in November 2026; and for Tokyo’s night gardens, Tokyo autumn light-ups.
