Shinkansen Luggage Rules 2026: Big Suitcases, the Oversized Baggage Seat, and Forwarding Your Bags Instead

Over 160 cm in total? On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen you need a seat with an oversized baggage area: a normal reserved seat, with no extra charge for the luggage space. Without one there is a ¥1,000 fee, and if those seats are full JR Central asks you to reserve another train. JR East lines need no reservation. How to book it, with a JR Pass too, and when to forward the case with Yamato TA-Q-BIN, LUGGAGE EXPRESS or an airport counter instead, with official prices checked 12 October 2026.

Yes, a big suitcase can go on the Shinkansen. Add its length, width and height. Up to 160 cm needs nothing. From 161 to 250 cm, the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu lines require a “seat with an oversized baggage area”: a normal reserved seat, with no extra charge for the luggage space. Without one you pay ¥1,000, and if those seats are full JR Central asks you to reserve another train. JR Kyushu’s all-non-reserved trains and JR East’s lines need no booking. Over 250 cm is not allowed.

Is my suitcase “oversized” on the Shinkansen? The 160 cm and 250 cm check

JR counts size the same way airlines and couriers do: length + width + height, added together. Then find your total in this table. The examples in brackets are the ones JR Central and JR West give; the sizes are theirs, read on 12 October 2026.

Total of three sidesWhat happens on the Shinkansen
Up to about 120 cm (e.g. 25 × 40 × 55 cm)Usually fits by your feet in an ordinary car, JR Central says, depending on the passenger. Green Car seats have footrests, so luggage goes on the rack there
Up to 160 cm (e.g. 30 × 50 × 80 cm)Fits the overhead rack in most cases; the Tokaido rack is about 42 cm deep. No reservation needed on the lines checked here
161 to 250 cm (“oversized”)Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen: reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area. JR East’s Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Yamagata and Akita Shinkansen: no reservation
Over 250 cm, or longer than 2 mCannot be brought on board. JR Central allows sports equipment and instruments longer than 2 m if they can be stood up in the car; the 250 cm total still applies
Up to 200 cm and 30 kgThe limit for Yamato TA-Q-BIN and for LUGGAGE EXPRESS, if you forward it instead

A worked example: a case that measures 80 × 55 × 30 cm totals 165 cm. That is over 160, so on the Tokaido Shinkansen it needs the oversized baggage seat. A case of 75 × 50 × 30 cm totals 155 cm and needs nothing. JR Central’s Japanese page says sports equipment, musical instruments, wheelchairs and strollers need no advance reservation whatever their size; that is an exception to the reservation rule only; the 250 cm total still applies to them, and JR Central lets items longer than 2 m on board only if they can be stood up in the car, and if you want them in the oversized baggage area you still have to reserve. For a large or long item, check with JR before you travel.

Which Shinkansen lines need an oversized baggage reservation?

Four lines need it: the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, run by JR Central, JR West and JR Kyushu. JR East’s guide, updated 1 May 2026, says its five Shinkansen lines need no luggage reservation. The Hokkaido Shinkansen is not on JR Central’s list of lines that require it, but JR Hokkaido’s own page was not checked for this guide.

Line (operator)Rule for a 161–250 cm case, read 12 October 2026
Tokaido Shinkansen, Tokyo–Shin-Osaka (JR Central)Reservation required. Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama
Sanyo Shinkansen, Shin-Osaka–Hakata (JR West)Reservation required
Kyushu Shinkansen, Hakata–Kagoshima-Chuo (JR Kyushu)Reservation required, except on trains where every car is non-reserved
Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, Kamome (JR Kyushu)Reservation required, except on trains where every car is non-reserved
Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Yamagata and Akita Shinkansen (JR East; the Hokuriku line west of Joetsumyoko is JR West)No reservation. JR East says its luggage areas are free, but space is limited and varies by train type. JR West’s FAQ also limits the rule to the four lines above
Conventional (non-Shinkansen) JR linesNo reservation, according to JR Central’s and JR West’s FAQs

Two edge cases. If you change trains, for example from a Nozomi to a Sakura at Shin-Osaka or Hakata, JR Kyushu’s FAQ says you need an oversized baggage seat on every train. And on the Tokaido Shinkansen some Kodama have only non-reserved seats in their ordinary cars; JR Central asks you to use a Kodama that has reservable seats, or the Green Car. JR East’s guide lists the Tohoku line to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (some trains run on into JR Hokkaido) and the Hokuriku line to Tsuruga (Hakutaka and Kagayaki continue onto JR West). JR Hokkaido’s own rules were not part of this check.

What the oversized baggage area is, and the deck luggage space

On the four lines above, the oversized baggage area is the floor space behind the last row of seats in some reserved cars. Book one of those last-row seats and you can use the space behind it. The space is shared: JR Central says it is used by the five passengers who booked the five back-row seats. Non-reserved cars and some reserved cars have no such seats, and on these four lines JR Central says an oversized case cannot go into those cars. The exception, from JR Kyushu: on a Kyushu or Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen train where every car is non-reserved, no oversized baggage reservation is needed.

How many there are, per train, from the operators’ own pages:

Tokaido Shinkansen (16 cars)

Nozomi: 57 seats with an oversized baggage area (45 ordinary, 12 Green). Hikari: 42 (30 ordinary, 12 Green). Kodama: 17 (5 ordinary, 12 Green), JR Central’s count for a Kodama whose ordinary reserved seats are in cars 7, 11 and 12.

Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen

N700 series (Mizuho, Sakura, Tsubame): last rows of ordinary reserved cars 4, 5, 6 and 8 and the Green Car, 20 seats. 800 series (Sakura, Tsubame): car 6, 2 or 4 seats. N700S (Kamome): cars 1 and 2, 8 seats.

Separately, there is a lockable luggage space in the deck (the area between cars) on 16-car Tokaido and Sanyo trains. Since 1 July 2025, as a trial with no end date yet, JR Central and JR West have opened this space to anyone without a reservation. Their joint release of 4 April 2025 gives six of them per train, in the decks of cars 3, 5, 7, 9, 13 and 15. Two things in that release matter:

  • An oversized case (over 160 cm) cannot be stored in the deck space during the trial. It still needs a seat with an oversized baggage area.
  • “Seats with an oversized baggage compartment” are not sold during the trial. Some English pages still describe them (JR Central’s and JR West’s, on 12 October 2026); the release is the document that says they are not set during the trial.

The deck shelves measure 80 × 60 × 50 cm (upper level) and 80 × 60 × 40 cm (lower level). Those dimensions add up to more than 160 cm, but the size of the shelf does not change the rule: during the trial only cases of 160 cm or less may go there. You lock it with a cable and a tap of a transport IC card such as Suica or ICOCA; JR West notes that some cards and phones will not work with the lock.

Since 1 July 2025 it has been open without a reservation, as a trial (still running on 12 October 2026), for cases of 160 cm or less. What about the space behind the last row in a car that has no oversized baggage seats? JR Central and JR West say you may leave luggage that is not oversized there, but passengers in the back row get priority, and you should keep your bag near you. In a Supreme Class private cabin on the Tokaido Shinkansen, oversized baggage is allowed in the cabin itself; see the Shinkansen private room guide for prices and trains.

How to book a Shinkansen seat with an oversized baggage area

The seat costs the same as any ordinary or Green Car reserved seat. JR West: “There are no extra charges for reserving oversized baggage area / compartment.” Seats go on sale with the rest, one month ahead; JR Kyushu gives 10:00 on the same date of the previous month.

  1. Online. JR Central lists three services where you can choose “Seat with an oversized baggage area”: the Tokaido Sanyo Kyushu Shinkansen Online Reservation Service (smartEX), JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION and JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation.
  2. Ticket machine. At a JR reserved-seat ticket machine, select the same option.
  3. Ticket office. Tell the staff you want a seat with an oversized baggage area.
  4. Booking for a group. You can sit with someone who has the oversized case, but JR asks people without large luggage to pick other seats when they can.
  5. Changing trains. Change the reservation before you board. If you miss the train, JR Central says you cannot take the case into a non-reserved seat on the next one; buy a new seat with an oversized baggage area for that train.
If you board without the reservation. All three operators’ pages say the same: you pay a ¥1,000 baggage fee (tax included) and put the case where the conductor tells you. The fee does not replace the reservation: JR Central says that if the seats are all full you will be asked to reserve another train.

With a Japan Rail Pass. Ask for a seat with an oversized baggage area at a JR ticket office, or book it through JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation, which JR Central says has offered these seats since 1 June 2020. The pass does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho unless you also buy the separate Nozomi Mizuho ticket for pass holders, so the usual choices with a pass are Hikari, Kodama, Sakura and Tsubame. Whether the pass pays for your route is worked out in JR Pass vs individual tickets; buying ordinary tickets is in how to buy JR train tickets.

If the pass pays on your route, you can reserve the luggage seat with it, and the luggage space adds no charge. On 12 October 2026 the official site listed the adult 7-day Ordinary pass at ¥50,000 bought online; the price on the linked page may differ.

Booking a seat for the Fuji view as well? The side and the row are in which seat for Mt Fuji. The oversized baggage seats are last-row seats, so you may not get both.

Reserve the luggage seat or forward the case? A decision table

The rules above decide what is allowed. This table is about what is easier, using only the services and prices on this page.

Forwarding a suitcase with Yamato TA-Q-BIN: how, how much, how long

TA-Q-BIN (宅急便, takkyubin) is Yamato Transport’s standard parcel service. Yamato’s English page lists it for Size 60 to Size 200: up to 200 cm in total and up to 30 kg, with no single side over 170 cm, insured up to ¥300,000.

Where to send from. Yamato’s English page lists pickup, its own sales offices, TA-Q-BIN agencies and convenience stores. A case bigger than Size 180 cannot be sent from some convenience stores. Dropping it at a sales office, agency or convenience store takes ¥100 off per parcel.

Size is set by total length or weight, whichever is larger.

Yamato sizeUp to (three sides) / weight
Size 120120 cm / 15 kg
Size 140140 cm / 20 kg
Size 160160 cm / 25 kg
Size 180180 cm / 30 kg
Size 200200 cm / 30 kg

So a 22 kg case of 150 cm is Size 160 (weight decides), and a 20 kg case of 165 cm is Size 180 (size decides).

The weight limits that decide a TA-Q-BIN size (25 kg for 160 size, 30 kg above it) are easier to stay under if you weigh the case before you leave the hotel.

What it costs. Yamato raised its rates for Size 120 to 200 on 1 October 2025, and its Japanese TA-Q-BIN page still pointed to that revision on 12 October 2026. Cash prices from the rate table that came into use that day, per case, one way, before the ¥100 drop-off discount:

From → to (Yamato zones)Size 160, cash and Size 140 / 180 / 200
Kanto → Kanto (e.g. Tokyo to Yokohama or Kawaguchiko)¥3,020 140: ¥2,630 · 180: ¥3,680 · 200: ¥4,470
Kanto → Chubu or Hokuriku (e.g. Tokyo to Nagoya or Kanazawa)¥3,020 140: ¥2,630 · 180: ¥3,680 · 200: ¥4,470
Kanto → Kansai (e.g. Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka)¥3,160 140: ¥2,780 · 180: ¥4,480 · 200: ¥5,410
Kanto → Kyushu (e.g. Tokyo to Fukuoka)¥3,630 140: ¥3,250 · 180: ¥5,220 · 200: ¥6,540
Kansai → Kyushu (e.g. Osaka to Fukuoka)¥3,160 180: ¥4,480

Paying cashless is a few yen cheaper (Kanto to Kansai, Size 160: ¥3,157). Kanto in Yamato’s table includes Yamanashi, so Kawaguchiko counts as Kanto. On 12 October 2026 Yamato’s English online rate calculator still showed the older figures: Kanto to Kansai, Size 160, ¥2,630, against ¥3,160 in the current table. The figures above are from the PDF table Yamato links from its revision notice. Within one prefecture a lower “same-prefecture” rate can apply under the conditions on Yamato’s page, for example when you drop the case at a Yamato office.

How long. Yamato’s Kyoto and Osaka pages say next-day delivery reaches almost all of Japan from there, and that some areas take about two days: Hokkaido, Aomori, Akita, Iwate, the Izu and Ogasawara islands, Nagasaki, Miyazaki, Kagoshima and Okinawa. For sending to Haneda for a flight, Yamato’s example is to send from Kyoto two days before.

What not to pack. Yamato will not carry passports, cash, credit cards, anything with dangerous substances such as batteries, or parcels worth more than ¥300,000 in total. Keep passports, medicine you need tonight, power banks and electronics in your day bag.

Ordering something to your hotel rather than sending your own case is a different service; that is covered in Amazon Japan delivery to your hotel.

Same-day luggage delivery: LUGGAGE EXPRESS and Yamato’s counters

JR Central now points travellers to LUGGAGE EXPRESS, a same-day service it launched with JTB on 1 November 2025, which moves bags on the Shinkansen. The prices below are from the FAQ text on the service’s own site, read 12 October 2026, per item, tax included as stated there. They are the hotel-based plans; station drop-off may be priced differently, and the site shows campaign prices at times.

RouteDrop-off by / ready from / price

Airport → Tokyo hotel14:00 / from 19:00 / Haneda ¥4,400, Narita ¥5,500

The conditions on the same site: drop-off is at a hotel, station or airport counter in the scheme (no station drop-off on the Osaka–Kyoto route), and a hotel used for drop-off or delivery must be one where you already have a booking; card payment on its website; up to 200 cm and 30 kg per item; nothing accepted after the deadline; no computers, cameras, phones, power banks or passports in the bag. Station counters at Tokyo and Kyoto were part of the launch release.

Yamato same-day in Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe. Yamato’s Kyoto and Osaka pages offer same-day delivery to listed wards of Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe, to hotels with a front desk that keeps luggage. For a Size 160 case sent within Kyoto city the Kyoto page gives ¥2,860, and ¥4,020 to Osaka or Kobe. Yamato’s general same-day page gives ¥3,470 for Size 160 within Kyoto city from the Kyoto Station counter, so ask at the counter which applies to you. Cut-off times vary by office.

Airport to hotel, hotel to airport: Narita, Haneda, and sending to Kansai Airport

If you land with a big case and your first night is in Tokyo, the delivery counters in the arrivals halls are the easy way to leave it behind. Counters and hours from each official page, read 12 October 2026:

Narita

Yamato, JAL ABC and Sagawa have counters on the 1st floor of Terminals 1 and 2, before security; Yamato also in Terminal 3. Yamato’s 1F counters open 6:30–22:30. Same-day orders: Yamato 6:30–10:30 (Terminal 3: 6:30–9:50), JAL ABC 6:30–14:00, Sagawa 6:30–14:00 to Tokyo’s 10 central wards and selected Urayasu hotels. Narita says all its delivery counters are certified by the government as able to offer same-day and next-day delivery in English.

Haneda (Yamato)

Same day: drop off by 11:00, delivered after 18:00 to hotels in central Tokyo, Kawasaki, Urayasu, Funabashi, Ichikawa and Narashino and parts of Yokohama and Chiba. Standard: drop off by 18:30 at Terminal 2 or 3, delivered from the next day anywhere in Japan. Size 160, cash, from the Haneda page: ¥5,170 to “a hotel in Central Tokyo”, ¥5,780 to “other areas”. Yamato’s general same-day page gives ¥5,780 for Size 160 “within the 23 wards of Tokyo from Haneda Airport”, so confirm which rate applies when you book. No delivery to convenience stores, Airbnb or unstaffed hotels.

Back to Haneda the same day

Leave the case at one of seven listed Yamato offices in Tokyo (Ginza, Ningyocho, Shinagawa, Shinjuku) by 11:00; collect it at the Haneda counter from 17:00 to 23:00 for international flights (17:00–21:00 domestic), from three hours before departure. Size 160: ¥5,780. Yamato states it offers no same-day delivery to Narita.

To Kansai Airport (KIX)

Yamato’s Kyoto and Osaka pages offer next-day delivery to Kansai Airport by 7:00: drop off at a listed office by 10:00 in Kyoto, or by 10:00–11:30 in Osaka depending on the office; some offices open on weekdays only. Size 160: ¥4,680 on both the Kyoto and the Osaka page. Kansai Airport’s own pages could not be opened on 12 October 2026, so its arrivals counters are not covered here.

Delivery counters close: the luggage still has to be collected during the counter’s hours, and Yamato warns that holiday hours (New Year, Golden Week, Obon) can differ. For which airport to fly into, see the flight and airport guide.

Sent the big case ahead from Narita? Keisei’s Skyliner runs between Narita Airport and Ueno.

Lockers and baggage storage, for a few hours

Locker prices vary by station and operator, so this section gives one official example rather than a range. Narita Airport’s page, read 12 October 2026, lists daily-rate lockers at ¥400 (small, 33 × 34 × 66 cm), ¥600 (medium, 50 × 34 × 66 cm) and ¥800 (large, 86 × 34 × 66 cm) a day, with the day ending at midnight and a maximum of eight days. In Terminal 2 (B1F) and Terminal 3 (2F) there are hourly lockers, including an extra-large size at ¥1,200 per 12 hours. A large locker is 34 cm wide, so a wide hard-shell case may not fit even when its total is under 160 cm. Narita’s MULTIECUBE smart lockers also come in an LW size, 86 × 56 × 65 cm, at ¥1,200 a day; otherwise the staffed baggage storage counters are the fallback. Yamato’s Hands-Free Travel pages list baggage storage as well as delivery at its tourist counters.

Checklist before you travel with a big suitcase

  • Measure and weigh. Add length, width and height. Over 160 cm on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu or Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen: book the oversized baggage seat. For TA-Q-BIN, weight can push you into a bigger size.
  • Book every leg. One oversized baggage seat per train, including connections.
  • On board, JR East asks you not to block seats, aisles or exits, not to leave bags sticking out of the rack, and not to block the recline of the last row. If a bag is hard to lift, JR Central says the crew will help when their other duties allow.
  • At the hotel desk, have the next hotel’s name and address ready for the waybill, and check the destination qualifies: Yamato’s same-day services in Kansai deliver only to hotels with a front desk that keeps luggage; its Haneda page excludes Airbnb and unstaffed hotels.
  • Weigh it: 25 kg is the top of Size 160 and 30 kg is Yamato’s limit; a luggage scale (linked above, in the Yamato section) settles it before you reach the desk.
  • Keep out of the case: passport, cash, cards, batteries and power banks, and anything you need tonight.
  • Send early enough: next day to most of Japan, about two days to Hokkaido, Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Nagasaki, Miyazaki, Kagoshima, Okinawa and the Izu and Ogasawara islands, by Yamato’s Kyoto and Osaka pages. LUGGAGE EXPRESS needs a hotel booking at both ends if you use hotels.

FAQ

Do I need to reserve a seat for my suitcase on the Shinkansen?

Only if its length, width and height add up to more than 160 cm (up to 250 cm), and only on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. There you book a “seat with an oversized baggage area”: you pay the normal reserved-seat price, and there is no extra charge for the luggage space. JR Kyushu’s trains with only non-reserved cars are the exception. JR East’s Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Yamagata and Akita Shinkansen take no luggage reservations.

What happens if I bring a big suitcase without a reservation?

On the four lines that require it, you pay a ¥1,000 baggage fee on board and store the case where the conductor says. The fee is not a substitute for the booking: if all the oversized baggage seats are taken, JR Central says you will be asked to reserve another train.

Can I reserve the oversized baggage seat with a Japan Rail Pass?

Yes. Ask at a JR ticket office, or book through JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation, which has offered these seats since 1 June 2020 according to JR Central. The pass does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho without the separate Nozomi Mizuho ticket for pass holders.

Can I put a large suitcase in the deck luggage space instead?

Only if it is 160 cm or less. Since 1 July 2025 the deck space on 16-car Tokaido and Sanyo trains has been open without a reservation as a trial, but JR Central and JR West say oversized cases cannot be stored there during the trial.

How much does it cost to forward a suitcase in Japan?

With Yamato TA-Q-BIN, a Size 160 case (up to 160 cm and 25 kg) costs ¥3,020 cash within the Kanto zone and ¥3,160 from Kanto to Kansai, by the table in use since 1 October 2025. LUGGAGE EXPRESS’s same-day Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka service costs ¥13,200 to ¥16,500 per item.

Can my luggage go from the airport to my hotel the same day?

At Haneda, Yamato delivers to central Tokyo hotels and some nearby areas after 18:00 if you drop off by 11:00. At Narita, same-day orders are taken until 10:30 by Yamato (9:50 in Terminal 3) and until 14:00 by JAL ABC and Sagawa, to limited areas. LUGGAGE EXPRESS also runs airport to Tokyo hotel, drop-off by 14:00.
