Hokkaido is the second-largest of Japan’s main islands and the least densely populated. Roughly the size of Austria with just over half its population. Daisetsuzan National Park alone is bigger than Tokyo Metropolis.
February for Sapporo Snow Festival and powder snow. July for Furano lavender at its peak; June–August for hiking. September for Japan’s earliest alpine autumn colours on Asahidake. Avoid mid-November to early December — ski resorts not open, road conditions transitional.
Fly to New Chitose Airport (CTS) near Sapporo from Haneda (HND) — 90 minutes. The Hokkaido Rail Pass covers JR trains for 5, 7 or 10 days. From Tokyo, the Hokkaido Shinkansen reaches Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in 4 hours.
