Shinkansen Private Room (Supreme Class Cabin): Price, Trains and How to Book

Supreme Class Cabin was set to start on 1 October 2026 on some Tokaido Shinkansen trains: car 7 for up to two people, car 10 for one. Tokyo to Kyoto on a regular-season Nozomi is ¥60,240 or ¥41,840 on Smart EX. JR Central's 1 October schedule lists 12 trains a day, 10 of them Tokyo–Kyoto/Osaka. How to book from abroad, and why the JR Pass can't book one.

Yes, the Tokaido Shinkansen now has private rooms. JR Central and JR West call them Supreme Class Cabin (スプリームクラス). Their release set the start for 1 October 2026, and JR Central’s train schedule, updated that day, lists the trains that carry them: some N700S trains between Tokyo and Hakata. Each of those trains has two lockable rooms: one in car 7 for up to two people and one in car 10 for one. From Tokyo to Kyoto on a regular-season Nozomi, booked on Smart EX, the car 7 room is ¥60,240 and the car 10 room ¥41,840 (Smart EX price chart dated 17 June 2026). Advance reservations are available only through Smart EX or EX Reservation, usually from one month before travel; JR Central also says empty Cabins may be sold on board, but that is not guaranteed. A Japan Rail Pass cannot reserve one. I have not been inside one of these rooms; everything below comes from the operators’ own pages.

What is the Supreme Class Cabin on the Shinkansen?

JR Central’s release of 17 June 2026 calls Supreme Class the top class on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, above the Green Car. It comes in two forms. The Cabin is a fully enclosed room with an electronic-lock door and went on sale first. The Seat, six semi-private seats behind a locking door in car 10, is scheduled for fiscal 2027.

Each fitted N700S train has one Cabin in car 7 and one in car 10:

RoomWhat JR Central lists
Car 7 CabinFor one or two people. A reclining seat plus a sofa with cushions. The seat faces Hakata and the sofa faces Tokyo, so the seat faces forward on westbound trains.
Car 10 CabinFor one person. A reclining seat that faces Tokyo, so it faces forward on eastbound trains.
Both roomsSeats don’t rotate. A tablet controls recline, leg rest, lumbar support, seat heater, lighting, airflow and volume. Dedicated Wi-Fi with no time limit, a headrest speaker you pair with your phone, a large table, power outlets with USB-A and USB-C, a coat hanger and a space for a carry-on-size case (under 55 × 40 × 25 cm).

On Nozomi and Hikari trains, a drink and a sweet are included once per passenger. Further drinks and snacks, including some sold only in Supreme Class, are ordered from the tablet and brought to the room. JR Central lists both services for Nozomi and Hikari only, and not on trains or sections without an onboard attendant.

JR Central posts this logo near the door closest to each Cabin, which is how you find your room on the platform. The logo includes Mount Fuji, but which side of the train the Cabin windows face is unconfirmed: on 11 October 2026 neither the release nor the English facilities page said. The seat letters in Mt. Fuji from the Shinkansen: which seat, both directions are for ordinary and Green Car seats only; they don’t tell you anything about the Cabins.

How much does a Shinkansen private room cost?

The price is for one booked passenger and buys the whole room. It includes the base fare and the Shinkansen supplement. These are Smart EX prices for one adult, one way, in the regular season, from the Smart EX price chart dated 17 June 2026:

Route and trainCar 7 / Car 10
Tokyo – Nagoya, Nozomi¥47,060 / ¥32,660
Tokyo – Kyoto, Nozomi¥60,240 / ¥41,840
Tokyo – Shin-Osaka, Nozomi¥60,790 / ¥42,390
Tokyo – Hiroshima, Nozomi¥86,620 / ¥60,020
Tokyo – Kyoto, Hikari or Kodama¥59,920 / ¥41,520

Take ¥200 off in the off-peak season, add ¥200 in the peak season and ¥400 in the busiest season. EX Reservation, the members’ service with an annual fee of ¥1,100, prices the same rooms a few hundred yen lower (¥60,500 and ¥42,100 for Tokyo–Shin-Osaka). On 11 October 2026, JR Central’s English Supreme Class pages mentioned only Smart EX.

A second adult in car 7 needs their own ticket. One reservation covers one person. The second adult needs their own ticket valid for the same train: Smart EX lists non-reserved, reserved or Green Car tickets, and its Japanese FAQ adds discount tickets and travel packages. As an example using the two published Smart EX fare charts (dated 17 June 2026 and 1 April 2025, as posted on 11 October 2026), a regular-season Nozomi from Tokyo to Kyoto would be the ¥60,240 room plus a ¥13,320 non-reserved ticket, ¥73,560 in total; check the price Smart EX shows on the day you book. Only the booker’s IC card or QR ticket unlocks the door; the FAQ says the companion’s own IC card won’t open it.

Children’s tickets are a separate rule from room capacity, and the two official sources word the age differently. On 11 October 2026, JR Central’s English Supreme Class page said an accompanying car 7 passenger “6 year old or younger” needs no ticket, while the Japanese Smart EX FAQ (Nos. 1549 and 1568) allows preschool children (幼児, “1 to under 6”) to travel free, up to two per ticketed adult or child, and babies under one without limit. Those are ticket rules; the room limits (car 7 up to two people, car 10 one) are stated separately, so ask JR Central before bringing a child into a Cabin. If your child is exactly 6, confirm with JR Central before booking.

Private room or Green Car?

For one person going Tokyo to Kyoto, using the two published Smart EX fare charts, the car 10 room comes to ¥23,000 more than a Green Car seat on a regular-season Nozomi. The Cabin prices come from the chart dated 17 June 2026, the others from the chart dated 1 April 2025, both as posted on 11 October 2026; check the Smart EX price on the day you book:

Option, Tokyo–KyotoWhat you get
Ordinary reserved seat, ¥13,970A reserved seat in an open ordinary car
Green Car seat, ¥18,840A first-class seat in an open car
Car 10 Cabin, ¥41,840A locked room for one, controls on a tablet, welcome drink and sweet, its own Wi-Fi and speaker
Car 7 Cabin, ¥60,240 (+ companion ticket)The same, for up to two people, with a sofa

What the room adds is a locked door and controls of your own. If what you want is simply a more comfortable seat, the Green Car costs less than half as much.

Which trains have the private rooms?

Only some N700S trains carry the rooms, and JR Central is adding more over time. Its schedule updated on 1 October 2026 lists 12 trains a day, six each way. Ten of them run between Tokyo and Kyoto/Shin-Osaka; the two Kodama trains run only between Tokyo and Nagoya. The schedule warns that some trains are confirmed only on the day and that a train can be swapped for one without Cabins after an inspection or a weather delay. The times below are from that schedule; check the day’s trains before you plan around one.

Westbound trainTokyo dep. → Kyoto / Shin-Osaka arr.
Hikari 6337:36 → 10:12 / 10:27
Nozomi 158:12 → 10:23 / 10:39

Kodama 854Nagoya 20:46 → 23:24
Nozomi 6221:06 / 21:21 → 23:32

The Nozomi trains run on to or from Hakata. Three of the trains stop at Odawara, the Shinkansen station for Hakone (Tokyo to Hakone: Romancecar or Shinkansen): Hikari 633 leaves Odawara at 8:11 and Kodama 833 at 15:05, both westbound, and Kodama 854 leaves at 22:50 for Tokyo. The Kodama trains stop at every station between Tokyo and Nagoya, including Mishima and Shin-Fuji, and have no welcome drink. To see what runs today, use the “Today’s Trains” search on JR Central’s Supreme Class page, or pick “Supreme Class Cabin” under train type on its departures board.

How to book a Shinkansen private room from abroad

Advance reservations for the Cabin are available only through JR Central’s two online services, Smart EX and EX Reservation. Separately, JR Central’s release says empty Cabins may be sold on board; that depends on a room being free and is not guaranteed. The Smart EX FAQ, checked on 11 October 2026, says it cannot be bought at station ticket offices or travel agency counters, and JR Central’s reservation page says it was not sold on “EX from LINE”. For a visitor, Smart EX is the route: its English site says there is no annual membership fee and that you can buy from your own country before you arrive. The Smart EX app is offered only in some countries’ stores (the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand, with a separate app for Taiwan); elsewhere, use the website.

Read the official Smart EX Supreme Class product page for the full conditions, then book on Smart EX (official English site):

  1. Register for Smart EX. You need an email address and a credit card. Payment must be made by the member as card holder, aged 18 or older, and Smart EX warns that a card without 3D Secure authentication may not work.
  2. Wait for the sales window. Rooms go on sale at 10:00 a.m. Japan time one month before the travel date. JR Central’s release adds that trains confirmed only on the day go on sale from 5:30 a.m. that day. As of 11 October 2026, Smart EX said Supreme Class was not part of its one-year-ahead booking.
  3. Choose Supreme Class as the seat type. JR Central’s English reservation page says to select Supreme Class under “Seat Types” in the app (“Seat Type” in the browser), after which the trains with a Cabin can be reserved. One reservation is for one person.
  4. Board with a QR ticket or IC card. Paper tickets can’t be picked up for this product. Your QR ticket or IC card opens the ticket gate and then the room: the Smart EX FAQ says visitor members hold the QR ticket up to the Cabin’s tablet camera, and IC card users touch the card reader beside the door.

Changes are free and unlimited as long as you haven’t gone through the gate; Smart EX’s English page says the train can be changed up to 4 minutes before departure, within three months of the original travel date. Payment is in yen, and Smart EX notes that each change charges the new fare before refunding the old one, so a card that adds foreign transaction fees may add them each time. Cancelling before departure costs ¥320. If your train is cancelled or swapped for one without Cabins, Smart EX says to change the booking yourself before the departure time.

The link below is not a way to book the Cabin. JR Central’s Smart EX FAQ (No. 1555, checked 11 October 2026) lists only Smart EX and EX Reservation for booking it; this link is not one of them. It opens Klook’s search results for “shinkansen tokyo kyoto”; check the ticket type and route on Klook.

Not for the Cabin: Klook’s search results for “shinkansen tokyo kyoto”.

Does the Japan Rail Pass cover the private room?

No. The pass cannot book a Cabin. The official Japan Rail Pass site marks Supreme Class with its own symbol in the facilities table: reservations cannot be made with the pass, and if you want to use it, you ask the train staff on board. JR Central’s release also says empty Cabins may be sold on board. As of 11 October 2026, neither page said what a pass holder would pay for one on board.

Buying the separate “NOZOMI MIZUHO” ticket doesn’t change that. A pass holder needs that ticket just to board a Nozomi at all; it does not make a Cabin bookable with the pass. On Hikari 633 and 648 and the two Kodama trains, the pass covers an ordinary seat (or a Green Car seat with a Green pass), with the same Cabin rule. The pass site also excludes the S Work cars on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen. For whether the pass pays for itself on a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip, see JR Pass vs individual tickets in 2026.

The car 7 companion is an open point. The Smart EX FAQ, checked on 11 October 2026, listed non-reserved, reserved and Green Car tickets, discount tickets and travel packages for the companion, and did not name the Japan Rail Pass. Confirm with JR Central before relying on a pass for the second person; station counters don’t sell the Cabin itself.

The pass covers ordinary (or Green) seats on Hikari and Kodama trains. It cannot book a Cabin, and the onboard price for pass holders was unconfirmed on 11 October 2026.

For Hikari and Kodama seats, not for a Cabin booking.

Booking rules to know before you pay

No connections into another class. If a trip needs two trains, the Cabin can only be combined with the same Cabin type or with non-reserved ordinary seats. You can’t go from car 7 to car 10, or from a Cabin to a Green Car, on one booking.
No stopovers. Get off partway and the unused part of the ticket is void. Local trains to and from the Shinkansen station are extra.
Big luggage. Both Cabins accept oversized baggage of 160–250 cm in total dimensions, and each has space beside the seat for a carry-on-size case (under 55 × 40 × 25 cm). Car 7 also has a dedicated baggage area next to the room for items under 80 × 60 × 40 cm; the room’s tablet explains how to lock and unlock it. JR Central says car 10 has no dedicated storage outside the room.
Delays. If the train arrives two hours or more late, Smart EX refunds the “specified amount” for your section.

Arriving in Kyoto or Osaka, and flying in

FAQ

Does the Shinkansen have private rooms?

Yes. Supreme Class Cabin was set to start on 1 October 2026 on some N700S trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen (Tokyo to Hakata), with two rooms per fitted train: car 7 for one or two people and car 10 for one. JR Central’s schedule updated on 1 October lists 12 such trains a day, 10 of them between Tokyo and Kyoto/Shin-Osaka; trains can change on the day.

How much is a private room from Tokyo to Kyoto?

On Smart EX, a regular-season Nozomi: ¥60,240 for the car 7 room and ¥41,840 for the car 10 room, per booked adult one way, fare included (price chart dated 17 June 2026). A second adult in car 7 needs their own ticket for the same train. For children, the ticket rules are separate from the room limit; ask JR Central before bringing a child into a Cabin.

Can I book the Shinkansen private room from outside Japan?

Yes, on Smart EX’s English website, with a credit card (Smart EX warns that cards without 3D Secure may not work). Sales usually open at 10:00 a.m. Japan time one month before the travel date; trains confirmed only on the day go on sale from 5:30 a.m. that day. Empty Cabins may also be sold on board, but that is not guaranteed. Station ticket offices and travel agency counters don’t sell it (Smart EX FAQ, checked 11 October 2026).

Can I use my JR Pass for Supreme Class?

No, the pass cannot book a Cabin, and a NOZOMI MIZUHO ticket doesn’t change that. The pass site says to ask the train staff on board; what a pass holder would pay there was not published on 11 October 2026.

How many people fit in each room?

Car 7 takes one or two people; a second adult needs their own ticket. Car 10 is for one person. Children’s tickets are a separate rule: on 11 October 2026 JR Central’s English page said an accompanying car 7 passenger aged “6 year old or younger” needs no ticket, while the Japanese Smart EX FAQ says preschool children aged 1 to under 6 travel free (up to two per ticketed passenger) and babies without limit.

Does every Nozomi have a private room?

No. Only N700S trains fitted with Supreme Class have one. JR Central’s 1 October 2026 schedule lists six trains each way per day, including Hikari and Kodama trains. Check the “Today’s Trains” search on JR Central’s Supreme Class page, because trains can be added or swapped on the day.
