Sapporo Snow Festival 2027: Dates, Sites and the Otaru Overlap

A document-based guide: I have not visited Hokkaido, this is built from the organisers’ announcements, and past-event context below is identified by year.

The 77th Sapporo Snow Festival runs 4–11 February 2027 across three sites — Odori Park, Susukino and Tsudome. Otaru’s Snow Light Path, about forty minutes away by train, runs 6–13 February. That leaves a window of 6–11 February when one hotel booking covers both events — and when I checked on 13 September 2026, the festival’s own English homepage was still showing dates from an earlier edition.

Official 2027 dates — and where to verify them

The Snow Festival Executive Committee published the 2027 outline on 13 July 2026: the 77th festival, 4 to 11 February 2027, eight days, three sites. I read the announcement in Japanese on the committee’s news page. When I checked the same organisation’s English top page on 13 September, it was still describing a years-old edition — the site dates shown there haven’t caught up with the Japanese side.

One planning nuance the announcement settles: the run is Thursday to Thursday, and the closing day — 11 February — is a national holiday, National Foundation Day. That gives the festival exactly one full weekend, 6–7 February, which is also when the Otaru overlap begins; those two days are likely to be among the busiest of the eight.

The large sculptures are completed before opening day. The International Snow Sculpture Contest entries at block 11 are a different rhythm — in past editions they were still being carved during the opening days, so early visitors have watched works in progress at that corner. Check the 2027 contest schedule when it appears. If your dates are flexible, 8–10 February sits inside the Otaru overlap while avoiding the weekend and the closing holiday — no date in festival week is quiet, but those three avoid its peaks.

The three sites, block by block

The committee’s outline goes further than any English page I could find: it lists what stands on each block (chome) of Odori Park. This is the 2027 layout as announced; the contents of each block had not been detailed when I checked, and the committee says information will be released in stages. Read that table like a map: the five large sculptures sit on blocks 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10, spread across the central stretch of the park. The park runs west from the TV Tower, and for a one-way walk the natural line is to start near the TV Tower at block 1 and finish near Nishi-Juitchome Station at block 11 — or the reverse — rather than doubling back with cold feet.

The Otaru overlap: 6–11 February

Otaru’s Snow Light Path (Yuki Akari no Michi) is the companion event down the coast: after dark, the compact port city is lit with candle lanterns — in past editions along the canal and through the old merchant streets. The Otaru Tourism Association confirmed the 2027 dates, 6 to 13 February, on 9 June 2026, with a plain note that details will follow; the venue layout for 2027 is not yet published. So the two events overlap for six days, 6–11 February.

Otaru is an easy add-on rather than a second base: it is about 40 minutes from Sapporo Station by JR train depending on the service, some Rapid Airport services currently continue through to Otaru (check the destination — and, nearer the time, the 2027 timetable), and the canal area is a walk from Otaru Station. Evening trains back to Sapporo during the event period carry event crowds, so check the return timetable in advance and allow time rather than aiming for one specific train.

For 2027, only the dates are fixed: lighting hours and venues are not yet published, so if an English page shows “2027” venue details, check whether they trace to a dated announcement from the organisers. If you would rather stay put after the candles go out, compare Otaru hotels for your dates rather than assuming either city is the cheap one — Otaru has its own event that week.

Festival week is one of the busiest and priciest weeks of Sapporo’s year. Your choice of base changes the late-night walk home, the Otaru connection and the price — compare rates and cancellation terms for your exact dates. My reading of the layout:

Getting there in February

New Chitose Airport is the main gateway, and JR Airport trains link it to Sapporo Station — some services continue directly to Otaru, so check the destination before boarding. Winter weather can disrupt Hokkaido flights, so build slack into the arrival day rather than landing hours before the evening you care about.
