Where to Stay in Sapporo: 4 Areas and 10 Hotels Compared (2026–27)

Sapporo Station, Odori, Susukino or Nakajima Park? Four areas on one subway line and ten hotels compared from their own websites: airport access, hot-spring baths, underground connections, tattoo rules and this winter's closures, plus which area suits the 2027 Snow Festival.

Central Sapporo is small enough that the four areas most visitors choose between sit on one subway line: Sapporo Station, Odori, Susukino and Nakajima-koen are consecutive stops on the Namboku Line, five minutes end to end. So the choice comes down to your first and last walk of the day: to the airport train, the Snow Festival, a late dinner in Susukino, or a quieter street. This guide compares the four areas and ten hotels in three of them, with this winter’s details: hot-spring baths, underground connections and closures. No hotel in Susukino itself is compared.

How the hotels were chosen

These ten hotels were chosen to compare station access, bath rules and winter closures across Sapporo Station, Odori and Nakajima Park, not to rank rooms or prices. Each hotel’s own website (not a booking site) was read on 20 October 2026 for walking times, baths, underground connections and closures. Room prices change daily, so none are listed.

The four areas at a glance

Times and distances are from the Sapporo City Transportation Bureau’s Namboku Line table, counted from the subway’s Sapporo Station.

JR Hokkaido’s airport pages, checked on 20 October 2026, list six Airport trains an hour from New Chitose Airport between 9:00 and 16:00; the fastest takes 33 minutes. JR Hokkaido’s fare search shows ¥1,230 for 10 December 2026, and you can tap in with Suica or another IC card for a non-reserved seat. A Special Rapid also leaves the airport at 23:21, bound for Teine via Sapporo; JR says it leaves on time even if flights are delayed.

Some Airport trains continue to Otaru: JR’s search for a February 2027 evening shows about 36 minutes from Sapporo for ¥800, while ordinary trains take longer. Check the destination before boarding.

JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo: connected to the station, with an onsen on the 22nd floor

The hotel describes itself as directly connected to JR Sapporo Station, three minutes on foot from the East Gate and South Exit. Its Sky Resort Spa Pulau Bulan on the 22nd floor uses natural hot-spring water from a source under the station’s south exit. Staying guests pay ¥2,150 and can return until the next morning’s session closes. Hours are 12:00–23:00, plus 6:00–9:00 for staying guests only.

  • Closure: the spa is closed for repairs from 9:00 on 1 November until noon on 22 November 2026.
  • Tattoos and age: the spa page says guests with tattoos cannot use it, and that it is for ages 18 and over.
  • Works nearby: the hotel warns of redevelopment noise or vibration in rooms, and of a road closure by its main entrance until around the end of March 2031.

Susukino is Sapporo’s food and nightlife district, one stop south of Odori. The Sapporo Tourism Association describes the Ganso Sapporo Ramen Yokocho, at South 5, West 3, as a 42-metre alley of 17 miso ramen shops. In Snow Festival week, the Susukino site fills Ekimae-dori from South 4 to South 6 with ice sculptures.

None of the ten hotels is in Susukino itself. Dormy Inn Premium (above) is at South 2, West 6, north of the Susukino festival site at South 4–6, and Nakajima-koen is the next stop south. The Pole Town underground mall connects Odori and Susukino stations; check its passage hours before a late walk back.

Nakajima Park: quieter, one stop past Susukino

Nakajima Park, next to Susukino, has a pond, the Hoheikan and Hassokan historic buildings, Kitara concert hall and an observatory, according to the Sapporo Tourism Association.

Sapporo Park Hotel: closure announced for 28 February 2027

Sapporo Park Hotel is right at Nakajima-koen Station: the hotel gives one minute from Exit 1 and “right by” Exit 3. It opened as Sapporo Hotel San-ai in 1964 and took its current name in 1966. Its operator, Granvista Hotels & Resorts, has announced a closure on 28 February 2027 ahead of rebuilding; confirm the final bookable night with the hotel.

  • Chi-Ka-Ho (Sapporo Ekimae-dori Underground Walkway), about 520 m long and opened on 12 March 2011, links the Sapporo Station area with Odori. It is open to walkers from 5:45 to 24:30 and closed outside those hours.
  • Sapporo Chikagai, opened in 1971, has two arms: Aurora Town, connected to Odori Station, and Pole Town, which continues from Odori Station to Susukino Station. The whole mall closes on 1 January and on two inspection days a year, in February and August; the page does not give the dates.

Sapporo Chikagai’s pages give shop hours (10:00–20:00), not passage hours. Of the hotels here, JR Tower Hotel Nikko states a direct connection to JR Sapporo Station and the Sapporo Grand Hotel to Chi-Ka-Ho.

Snow Festival week, 4–11 February 2027

The organisers’ outline of 13 July 2026 sets the 77th festival for 4 to 11 February 2027 on three sites, with the programme due from mid-December 2026. For the festival, see the Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 guide. For choosing a base:

SiteWhere it is and the closest base
OdoriOdori Park, West 1 to West 11. Odori hotels here give 3–5 minutes on foot to the park or its station; Sapporo Station hotels are 2 min away by subway or a walk through Chi-Ka-Ho.
SusukinoEkimae-dori, South 4 to South 6. One subway stop south of Odori, and one stop north of Nakajima-koen.
TsudomeSakae-machi, East Ward. The festival site’s earlier guidance gives a 15-minute walk from Sakaemachi Station on the Toho Line; check the 2027 guidance for shuttle buses.

The Toho Line runs from Sapporo Station to Sakaemachi in 11 minutes. Otaru’s Snow Light Path runs from 6 to 13 February 2027, according to the Otaru Tourism Association, which says details will follow; the two events overlap from 6 to 11 February.

If central Sapporo is full, Otaru is another base during the overlap. Paid link: I may earn a commission if you book. Search Otaru hotels on Booking.com

Hot baths in the city

Five of the ten hotels list a large shared bath for staying guests, and two of those identify their water as natural hot spring. Keio Plaza’s members’ pool and gym also has a bath and sauna.

HotelBath, as the hotel describes it
Hotel Monterey EdelhofNatural hot spring, 14th floor, free for staying guests. No tattoos.
JR Tower Hotel NikkoNatural hot spring, 22nd floor, ¥2,150 for staying guests, 18 and over. No tattoos. Closed 1 Nov to noon on 22 Nov 2026.

Cross Hotel SapporoTop-floor bath with an open-air tub, staying guests only.
Dormy Inn Premium SapporoLarge bath with semi-open-air tubs, 2nd floor. No tattoos.

For a hot-spring town rather than a hotel bath, take the JR train to Noboribetsu Station and continue from there to the onsen town; the Noboribetsu Onsen guide covers that last stretch.

Which hotel fits which trip

Connected to the station, but next to works

JR Tower Hotel Nikko states a direct link to JR Sapporo Station but warns of redevelopment noise. JR Inn Sapporo is four minutes from the West Gate.

A hot-spring bath over New Year

Edelhof’s free onsen closes with the whole hotel from 16:00 on 31 December to 9:00 on 4 January. JR Tower’s paid onsen has its published closure from 1 November to noon on 22 November 2026.

Nakajima Park in snow

Premier Hotel recommends the longer Exit 1 route (about six minutes) in winter and at night. Sapporo Park Hotel is one minute from Exit 1, with closure announced for 28 February 2027.

Train or bus to the airport

From the station area the train takes 33 minutes at its fastest. Keio Plaza’s airport bus takes about 90 minutes but stops at its own north entrance.

FAQ

Should I stay near Sapporo Station, Odori or Susukino?

Sapporo Station for airport trains and Otaru, Odori for the Snow Festival’s main site, Susukino for food and late nights. They are consecutive Namboku Line stops.

Which area makes the Snow Festival easiest on foot?

Odori for the main site, which runs along Odori Park from West 1 to West 11; Susukino or Nakajima Park for the ice sculptures on Ekimae-dori. Check each hotel’s own walking time.

How do I get from New Chitose Airport to my hotel?

The fastest JR Airport service takes 33 minutes to Sapporo Station (¥1,230 in JR Hokkaido’s search for 10 December 2026); allow extra time to reach your hotel. Premier Hotel Nakajima Park lists an airport-bus stop about four minutes away, and Keio Plaza lists its north entrance as the airport-bus stop (about 90 minutes).

Can I walk between Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino without going outside?

Largely: Chi-Ka-Ho links the Sapporo Station area with Odori, and from Odori, Pole Town continues to Susukino Station. Chi-Ka-Ho is open to walkers from 5:45 to 24:30; for Pole Town, check passage hours before a late walk. Of the hotels here, only JR Tower Hotel Nikko and the Sapporo Grand Hotel state a direct connection.

Are there onsen hotels in central Sapporo?

Two of the ten hotels compared identify their baths as natural hot spring: Hotel Monterey Edelhof (free for staying guests) and JR Tower Hotel Nikko (¥2,150 for staying guests). Edelhof closes from 16:00 on 31 December 2026 to 9:00 on 4 January 2027, and the JR Tower spa from 1 November to noon on 22 November 2026.

Is Otaru a good base instead of Sapporo?

It can be during the Snow Light Path (6–13 February 2027), which overlaps the Snow Festival from 6 to 11 February. With Otaru about 36 minutes away on an Airport train, a Sapporo Station base with one evening in Otaru is simpler if you also need the airport train.
