What to do at each stage
6+ months out
Decisions, not purchases. Pick your month (our month guides (May–October so far), sakura board and koyo board exist for exactly this), sketch the route, and start watching hotel prices for your dates. If your trip hits a famous squeeze — sakura-week Kyoto, autumn-leaves Kyoto, Golden Week anywhere — this is when holding one refundable room starts making sense. Most fixed-release tickets need no purchase action yet, though published annual schedules (sumo) can already be worth calendaring.
3–6 months out
Lock the bones. Refundable rooms in your higher-demand cities — compare the property’s direct rate too, then the same dates on Booking.com, Trip.com and Agoda (affiliate links; inventory differs by platform and market — use whichever shows the better refundable terms). Note what your trip touches in the table above: a sumo basho, Koshien, a Fuji climb. Anything marked ANNOUNCED gets its sale date in your calendar now.
1–3 months out
Flights and the two-month releases. Expedia’s 2026 analysis puts the cheapest international-fare window at 8–15 days before departure — with 31–45 days as the conservative play; treat both as data, not prophecy, and buy when a fare fits your budget rather than chasing the bottom. The two-month releases also live here, on three different clocks: Disney is a daily rolling two-month window, Ghibli Park is a monthly 10th-at-14:00 release, and USJ runs generally around two months.
1 month out — the big week
Several clocks cluster here, on different rules: Shinkansen reserved seats (travel day minus one month, 10:00 JST), Ghibli Museum (the 10th, for the following month), and many sumo advance sales — though sumo always follows the exact date printed in the annual schedule, not a one-month formula. If your itinerary depends on a specific busy train — Hakone weekend mornings, holiday-period services — this is the key week for date-specific reservations.
2 weeks out
Shibuya Sky opens its window. Sort your arrival logistics (airport transfers, luggage forwarding) and your connectivity — the pre-departure checklist below. Reconfirm cancellation deadlines on every refundable room you are still holding.

What can wait (and should)
IC cards (mobile Suica/ICOCA are convenient on compatible devices — compatibility and card acceptance vary, and physical cards remain the fallback), ordinary metro and local trains, most temples and gardens, and city buses need no advance planning. Walk-in dining is widely available too — but check any restaurant or attraction that is essential to your trip on its own official page, because “usually fine” is not the same as “guaranteed for you”. Over-booking a Japan trip is a real failure mode: every pre-committed slot is flexibility you sold. Reserve what has real scarcity; leave the rest to the trip.
Before departure: the connectivity checklist
Two weeks out, sort your data. First, check when your plan’s validity starts — at purchase, at installation, or at first connection; that decides everything else. If installation does not start the clock, install on reliable home Wi-Fi before departure and save the QR/manual settings offline; otherwise, follow the provider’s activation instructions to the letter. What sells out first in Japan?
The highest-risk categories: scarce fixed-capacity tickets (Ghibli Museum, Universal Express Pass on peak dates, sumo boxes, Koshien reserved sections) can go at or near their release moments on high-demand dates, and peak-week hotel inventory in Kyoto erodes months out. Ordinary trains, entry to most attractions and off-peak hotels do not deserve panic.
