GALA Yuzawa is the ski resort where the Shinkansen stops inside the building: you step off the train, and the same complex holds the ticket counter, the rental desk and the gondola to the slopes. The resort’s own website advertises 77 minutes from Tokyo. The detail that catches people out is the calendar — last season, sightseeing operations began a week before piste skiing did, and skiing ended on 17 April while sightseeing ran on to 6 May.
How the station becomes a ski resort
The sequence, from the resort’s own facility pages: the Joetsu Shinkansen arrives at GALA Yuzawa Station, which shares its building with the Kawabanga ski centre — ticket counter, the FISCHER rental floor, lockers, changing rooms and baggage services under one roof. In the published 2025-26 hours, the building opened at 7:30, the ticket counter at 8:00 and the gondola — the main route up to the Cheers ski area, where the slopes begin — ran 8:30 to 16:30. The courses run between 358 and 1,181 metres: 16 courses, 11 lifts, a longest run of 2,500 metres and a maximum pitch of 33 degrees, by the resort’s published specifications.
One rule shapes everything for mixed groups: you cannot ride the lifts without skis or a snowboard. The exceptions are the gondola itself and the Barouche sightseeing lift — which is exactly what makes the non-skier tickets below workable.
The calendar trap: four seasons in one winter
GALA’s operating year is not one continuous ski season, and the calendar matters when you choose dates. For 2026-27 the resort has published two dates so far: a sightseeing-only week from 12 to 18 December 2026 (gondola and sightseeing lift only, with no skiing whatever the snow), then skiing from 19 December 2026 to 5 May 2027. It had not published this season’s spring dates when we checked on 20 October. Last season ran in four phases, and the table shows that pattern:
Also new for 2026-27: GALA has closed its South area for the season, including the ungroomed 260-man Dollar and Bronco courses, the Wagonette pair lift and the Landau ropeway to Yuzawa Kogen. Skiing runs in the Central and North areas.

The policy language matters: the sightseeing-only and central-area-only phases applied regardless of snow conditions, by the resort’s own wording. In 2025-26 that meant a December visitor in the sightseeing week could not ski however deep the cover looked, and a late-April visitor came for the sightseeing operations rather than the pistes. When the 2026-27 dates appear, the phase boundaries are the lines to check — not just “opening day”.
If you are not skiing
Non-skiers have their own ticket. For 2026-27 the Gondola + Barouche ticket is ¥6,500 at the window or ¥5,500 online (it was ¥5,000 last season). Last season it gave unlimited gondola rides and one round trip on the sightseeing lift, and a gondola-only ticket cost ¥3,500; GALA had not listed a gondola-only ticket for 2026-27 when we checked on 20 October. Sledges and snow boots could be hired separately, with sledging restricted to the dedicated Yuki Asobi snow-play park — and the sightseeing phases in December and late April existed precisely for visitors who wanted snow without skis.
Back in the building, SPA GALA-no-yu is an onsen with a pool and sauna inside the complex. Last season it opened from noon, and the price turned on your entry time: adult entry with a towel set was ¥1,200 entering by 15:00 and ¥1,500 after (elementary children ¥700 and ¥900); preschoolers entered free, though the towel set was not included. A free shoes-off lounge sits alongside. What it costs in 2026-27
GALA sells its main tickets at two prices: the window price on the day, and a cheaper web price from its online ticket store. Its published 2026-27 prices:

Last season the web price was sold until 15 minutes before use, and the table below is kept for comparison: the adult 1-day, 4-hour and spring tickets were ¥500 cheaper online, and the 2-day ticket ¥1,000 cheaper.

For families: the 2026-27 1-day ticket for elementary-school children is ¥4,000 at the window or ¥3,500 online (last season ¥3,000 / ¥2,800), and up to two preschool children ride free per accompanying adult, with any further preschooler charged the elementary rate. That two-free rule is the line worth noticing — several resorts we have checked free only one.
Renting instead of hauling
The rental floor in Kawabanga stocked ski and snowboard sets at ¥6,500 a day for ages 13 and over (¥3,500 for 12 and under) and jacket-and-trousers at ¥5,500 last season, with web application and payment in advance to shorten the reception queue. Note the cut-offs — last hire at 15:15, returns by 17:45 in the regular season — and the limits: base layers are yours to bring, and gloves and hats were sold, not rented.
Getting there, and the ticket bundles
The Joetsu Shinkansen runs through Echigo-Yuzawa to GALA Yuzawa Station in winter — the resort’s own figure is 77 minutes from Tokyo, and JR East’s general guidance says about 1 hour 20. There is also a free shuttle from Echigo-Yuzawa Station of about 10 minutes for anyone arriving on services that do not run through, in JR East’s route description.

2026-27: what was published by 20 October
GALA has published the opening dates (sightseeing from 12 December, skiing 19 December 2026 – 5 May 2027) and the 1-day, 4-hour and sightseeing ticket prices above. Spring dates and the season passport were not yet published. One structural note from the 2025-26 season-pass small print: the substitution arrangement for days when GALA suspended operations was abolished that season — a passholder visiting a partner resort instead needed to buy a lift ticket there. The partner-resort discounts themselves were a separate perk and continued.
Beyond GALA’s own slopes
The standard GALA ticket covers GALA only. For 2026-27, the Landau ropeway link to Yuzawa Kogen is closed with the South area; GALA says the connection to Yuzawa Kogen is by shuttle bus instead. Last season an upgrade to a three-resort ticket — GALA, Yuzawa Kogen and Ishiuchi Maruyama — was sold at the Cheers information desk. When the inter-resort connections are running it links three mountains; check the connecting lifts’ status on the day.

How long does it take from Tokyo?
The resort’s own headline figure is 77 minutes by Joetsu Shinkansen, and JR East’s general guidance says about 1 hour 20 — journey time varies by service. The station is inside the ski centre, so there is no onward transfer, though you should still allow time for tickets, rental and changing before you are actually on snow.
Is GALA an indoor ski slope?
No — GALA is an outdoor mountain resort. Its 16 courses run between 358 and 1,181 metres above sea level, reached by gondola from the station building, with a vertical drop of 823 metres and a longest run of 2,500 metres, per the resort’s published course data. What confuses people is the architecture: only the ski centre is fused with the station.
When does it open for 2026-27?
GALA opens for sightseeing only (gondola and sightseeing lift, no skiing whatever the snow) from 12 to 18 December 2026, and for skiing from 19 December 2026 to 5 May 2027. Spring dates were not yet published on 20 October. Last season skiing ended 17 April, with sightseeing continuing to 6 May.
What can I do there if I don’t ski?
Ride up anyway. The gondola-plus-sightseeing-lift ticket is ¥6,500 at the window or ¥5,500 online in 2026-27 (last season there was also a ¥3,500 gondola-only ticket, not yet listed this season); lifts otherwise require skis or a snowboard. There is a snow-play park with sledge and boot hire, an onsen with pool and sauna in the station complex (adult entry ¥1,200–1,500 with towels last season, depending on entry time), and the December and late-April sightseeing phases were built around non-skiers.
Can I turn up with nothing and rent everything?
Nearly. Last season’s rental floor covered the main equipment and outerwear — ski or snowboard sets at ¥6,500 and jacket-and-trousers at ¥5,500 for ages 13 and over — with web application and payment in advance to shorten reception. Bring your own base layers; gloves and hats were sold rather than rented. Last hire was 15:15 and returns closed at 17:45 in the regular season.
Is there a cheaper way to buy the lift ticket?
Buy on the web: for 2026-27 the adult 1-day and 4-hour tickets are ¥500 under the window price, and the gondola-plus-sightseeing ticket ¥1,000 under. Last season the web price was sold until 15 minutes before use; or time your trip, since the spring-period day ticket was ¥1,000 cheaper than the regular one. For families, up to two preschoolers ride free per paying adult. JR SKISKI rail-plus-lift packages are also worth checking — inclusions vary by plan.
Can I ski to Yuzawa Kogen or Ishiuchi Maruyama on the same ticket?
Not on the standard day ticket — the three-mountain connection was sold as a separate upgrade at the Cheers information desk last season. For 2026-27 the Landau ropeway to Yuzawa Kogen is closed, and GALA says the link is by shuttle bus. The standard ticket covers GALA only, and how much of GALA is open on a given day depends on conditions.
