Kumamoto to Mount Aso Without a Car: Trains, the Kusasenri Bus and a Day Trip (2026)

How to get from Kumamoto to Mount Aso by train and bus: the Kyushu Odan and Aso Boy times, Aso Boy's operating days, the bus from Aso Station to Kusasenri and its last bus down, a day trip that runs every day, the crater closure, passes, bags and where to stay near Aso Station.

Japan · Kumamoto · Aso

By Nobu · a researched guide, not a trip report · checked 28 October 2026 against JR Kyushu, Kyushu Sanko and Sanko Bus, the Japan Meteorological Agency, the Aso volcano disaster prevention council, Aso City, the Aso Volcano Museum, Minamiaso Railway and Aso Kumamoto Airport

You can visit Mount Aso from Kumamoto without a car: a JR train to Aso Station, about an hour and a half, then Sanko Bus’s Aso Mountain Line bus up to Kusasenri and the summit terminal. The last one down leaves Kusasenri at 16:35. As of 30 October 2026, the area within about 1 km of the crater is closed, so plan a car-free day around Kusasenri and the summit terminal rather than the crater.

This guide sets out the published train and bus times checked on 28 October 2026: which train to take, the bus up the mountain, a day trip from Kumamoto using trains that run every day, and where to sleep near the station if you would rather stay. For the crater’s status as it changes, see our Mount Aso guide.

A day trip from Kumamoto to Kusasenri, without a car

This plan uses the Kyushu Odan limited express, which JR Kyushu runs every day, and Sanko Bus’s Aso Mountain Line. Times are from JR Kyushu’s timetable for 28 October 2026 and Sanko Bus’s timetable dated 11 May 2026.

StepTime
Kyushu Odan 1, Kumamoto → Aso8:25 → 9:54
Bus, Aso Station → Kusasenri10:25 → 10:51
Time at Kusasenri, including the Aso Volcano Museum4 hours 54 minutes
Bus, Kusasenri → Aso Station15:45 → 16:13
Kyushu Odan 6, Aso → Kumamoto17:25 → 18:48

The 15:45 bus gives you 72 minutes at Aso Station before the train. The last bus, at 16:35, reaches the station at 17:03, 22 minutes before it: Sanko Bus says it does not guarantee connections with trains, and that when a bus is crowded you may not get on the one you want, so treat the last bus as a fallback rather than the plan.

On days when Aso Boy No. 1 runs, it leaves Kumamoto at 9:57 and reaches Aso at 11:22; the 11:50 bus gets you to Kusasenri at 12:16, giving you 3 hours 29 minutes before the 15:45 bus down. Aso Boy No. 1 does not run on 14 November, nor on the days when the Kawasemi Yamasemi replaces the Aso Boy (see below).

The Aso Volcano Museum at Kusasenri is open 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30) and charges ¥1,300 for adults; it closes on 14 January and 14 July each year.

Before you set out: check the day’s crater restrictions on the Aso volcano disaster prevention council’s site and the bus timetable on Sanko Bus’s site. After 16:35 there is no Aso Mountain Line bus down from Kusasenri on the timetable. Once you are back at Aso Station, the last train to Kumamoto leaves at 21:56 and, on JR Kyushu’s timetable, reaches Kumamoto at 23:23 without a change.

Kumamoto to Aso by train: which one to take

All three options run on JR’s Hohi Line through Higo-Ozu and Tateno. About 27.3 km of the line between Higo-Ozu and Aso was cut by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, the Kumamoto prefectural assembly’s bulletin notes, and JR Kyushu’s corporate history records the section reopening on 8 August 2020.

Kyushu Odan limited express (daily). Three a day each way between Kumamoto and Oita or Beppu, stopping at Aso. JR Kyushu’s timetable lists each one as running every day, with some reserved seats.

Aso Boy (operating days only). JR Kyushu’s sightseeing train, all seats reserved, with panorama seats at each end. It costs ¥3,080 for an adult from Kumamoto to Aso at the standard-season rate: the fare plus the reserved-seat limited-express charge, which varies by travel date. Reserve a seat before you board; JR Kyushu says seats cannot be assigned on the train.

JR Kyushu’s calendar, current on 22 October 2026, shows the Aso Boy running every day from November 2026 to February 2027, with these exceptions: on 14 November only the afternoon pair (No. 3 and No. 4) runs; on 24–27 November, 25–28 January and 15–19 February the Kawasemi Yamasemi runs instead, with the same stops. JR says it will publish the March 2027 dates in mid-January. JR Kyushu’s Rail Pass page lists the Aso Boy and the Kyushu Odan among the trains the pass can be used on; for the Aso Boy you still need a seat reservation.

Local trains. Most local trains from Kumamoto need a change at Higo-Ozu. On the 28 October timetable, one local train runs through from Kumamoto at 13:48 to Aso (15:41) and Miyaji; in the other direction, the 21:56 from Aso runs through to Kumamoto, arriving at 23:23.

Aso Station to Kusasenri: the Aso Mountain Line bus

Sanko Bus’s Aso Mountain Line (阿蘇登山線) runs from Aso Station to Kusasenri and the Aso summit terminal, about 35 minutes to the terminal, with the same timetable every day. You do not book: it is first come, first served, and Sanko Bus warns that when it is busy you may not get the bus you want. The fare from Aso Station to Kusasenri or the summit terminal is ¥1,000, on Sanko Bus’s fare table.

Sanko Bus’s timetable page lists this timetable, dated 11 May 2026, as current on 28 October; its route summary page, though, gives nine buses up and ten down, so check the times on the day and again before a winter trip. For Sanko’s other bus over the mountain, the Aso–Takachiho bus, see our Mount Aso guide.

The crater: what is open now

On 1 September 2026 the Japan Meteorological Agency lowered Aso’s alert level from 3 to 2, and its bulletin of 23 October still warned of large stones and pyroclastic flows within about 1 km of Nakadake’s first crater. The Aso volcano disaster prevention council reopened the way to the summit plaza on 2 September; on 30 October its site still showed the area within about 1 km of the crater as closed, and Sanko Bus listed its crater shuttle as suspended because the Aso park road was closed.

So on a car-free trip, Kusasenri and the summit terminal are as far as you go. Restrictions can change on the day; our Mount Aso guide follows it, and the council’s site posts the day’s restrictions.

From Aso Kumamoto Airport

The airport’s access page lists these buses towards Aso: the Yamabiko bus to Aso Station, about an hour; the Aso summit line bus to the Aso summit terminal, about 1 hour 10 minutes; and the Airport Liner to Higo-Ozu Station, 15 minutes for ¥200, where you change to the Hohi Line. Check the stop and fare at the airport. The Kyushu Odan bus to Aso and Kurokawa also calls at the airport; its times are in our Kurokawa Onsen guide.

Passes: JR Kyushu Rail Pass and SUNQ Pass

The JR Kyushu Rail Pass (Northern Kyushu) costs ¥15,000 for 3 days and ¥17,000 for 5 days for adults, and covers JR Kyushu’s local and limited express trains, including the Aso Boy with a reserved seat.

For buses, Sanko Bus says the All Kyushu and Northern Kyushu SUNQ Passes are valid on the Kyushu Odan bus; the crater shuttle does not accept them. Sanko Bus does not say on its Aso Mountain Line page whether the SUNQ Pass covers that line, so ask before you rely on it.

Minamiaso Railway: a side trip from Tateno

A Minamiaso Railway train.

The Minamiaso Railway runs from Tateno, on the Hohi Line, to Takamori. It reopened along its whole length on 15 July 2023, the railway says, after about seven years and three months. It does not go up the mountain, so it is a side trip, not a way to reach Kusasenri.

Where to stay near Aso Station without a car

Stay the night and you can take the first bus up at 9:40 and stay at Kusasenri until the last bus down without a train to catch. The three below can be reached on foot from the station or by the hotel’s shuttle. Details come from each property’s own site, its Aso City tourism listing, or its Rakuten Travel and Booking.com listings, checked on 28 October 2026. If you would rather sleep in Kumamoto and come up on the morning train, compare hotels in Kumamoto on Agoda (paid link: I may earn a commission if you book).

Fairfield by Marriott Kumamoto Aso: near Aso Station

Its Rakuten Travel listing gives it as a 2-minute walk from JR Aso Station, and the Aso City tourism association describes it as close to both the station and Michi-no-Eki Aso, the roadside station with the luggage service. Its Booking.com listing gives check-in from 15:00 and check-out by 11:00, and lists a takeaway breakfast.

  • Who it suits: travellers who want the shortest walk to the station and the first bus up.
  • Catch: breakfast is a takeaway; check dinner options for your dates.

Aso Base Backpackers: the budget option by the station

A hostel on the station side of town; its Rakuten Travel listing gives it as a 3-minute walk from Aso Station, and Booking.com lists a mixed dormitory and double and twin rooms, with shared bathrooms. The hostel’s own booking terms set check-in at 16:00–20:00 (you can drop your bags earlier), warn that if you arrive after 20:00 without telling them you may not be able to stay, and do not allow check-in after 22:00. It asks for payment in cash at check-in; its English booking terms add that it can take a credit card for an extra handling fee.

  • Who it suits: solo travellers and anyone on a budget.
  • Catch: shared bathrooms, cash preferred (cards carry a fee), and a late train can leave you too late to check in.

Kamenoi Hotel Aso Park Resort: onsen baths, shuttle from the station

The hotel’s site describes a free shuttle of about 5 minutes from JR Aso Station, and its FAQ says the shuttle must be booked by the day before; the Aso City tourism association adds that the hotel is within a 15-minute walk of the station. It has hot-spring baths, indoor and outdoor, including a view bath facing the five peaks of Aso, and three private baths at ¥2,000 for 50 minutes for staying guests, by reservation. The baths in the rooms are heated tap water, not hot-spring water. Dinner and breakfast are buffets; check-in is 15:00 and check-out 10:00.

  • Who it suits: travellers who want an onsen soak after Kusasenri without a car.
  • Catch: book the shuttle by the day before, and on a plan with dinner and breakfast, the hotel’s latest check-in is 19:30.
