At the 2026 summer Koshien tournament (5–22 August), glass bottles and cans are banned from the stands, there are no lockers, no bag storage and no re-entry — and on 7–12 August the stadium empties completely between the 8:00 morning session and the 13:30 afternoon session. Those five rules, all from the organiser’s official bulletin, decide how good your day is. Here is the game-day routine I’d run again: a supermarket in the station-front mall at 8:00, what actually holds up in 35°C stands, and what to eat once you’re inside.
Before the gates: the AEON run
Cross the station forecourt to Corowa Koshien, the shopping centre facing Hanshin Koshien Station, and head down to AEON Style Koshien — the supermarket floor on B2F, open 8:00 to 22:00. This is the cheapest, coolest (literally) staging area you will find: onigiri, cut fruit, salted snacks, frozen drinks for the walk and the queue, sunscreen you forgot, and a towel if you didn’t believe the humidity warnings.
Two honest caveats. On 7–12 August the morning session starts at 8:00 — the same minute AEON opens — so for morning tickets, shop the night before or grab what you need from a convenience store en route. And the carry-in rules shape the basket:
Skip glass & cans
Glass bottles and cans are banned outright, and unlike pro game days (where the stadium’s own Q&A describes decanting into paper cups) the 2026 tournament bulletin offers no decanting service at the gate. Don’t buy anything you’ll have to abandon.
Food travels fine
The official notice bans glass bottles and cans — it does not list a food ban. Onigiri, sandwiches and fruit came through my bag check without a second glance. Expect bags to be inspected.
Drinks: play it straight
The 2026 bulletin names only bottles and cans as banned, and the stadium’s own stalls sell PET-bottle drinks inside. A soft squeeze bottle or flask is the belt-and-braces option; check the gate signage on the day.
Pack for no lockers
There is no cloakroom and no locker room, and once you exit you cannot come back in. One bag, on your lap or under your seat, for the whole session.
Surviving the heat (this is the real opponent)
The organisers rebuilt the schedule around the heat: 2026 runs two-session play on ten days, with the 8:00 starts precisely so nobody sits through a 1pm first pitch in midsummer. Inside, the official measures list reads like a field hospital — WBGT monitoring, cooling breaks for players, mist fans, wall-mounted fans at the gates, air-conditioned concourses, shade tents and a first-aid room. Some of those measures are set up for the school cheering squads rather than general spectators, so build your own plan around the concourses and gate fans: air-conditioned laps between innings are not cheating, they’re strategy.

The stadium publishes a dedicated high-school-tournament menu, so the stalls you’ll meet in August are documented, not folklore. The one order I’d defend in an argument: Koshien curry — listed at ¥900 on the stadium’s official 2026 gourmet pages, a stadium institution served in a shallow tray you can balance on your knees. Beyond that, the tournament pages list stalls like Kushikatsu Yokozuna (skewers, very Kansai) and the Live Restaurant Fire stands; the official note warns some menus pause on certain days, so treat any single stall as a hope, not a promise.
And the famous one: kachiwari — the bag of crushed ice with a straw that is to Koshien what peanuts are to an American ballpark. It’s as much cold compress as drink; press it to your neck for an inning first. I couldn’t find it on the official 2026 menu pages, so consider it a look-for rather than a guarantee.
The etiquette that isn’t written on your ticket
The official rules ban standing on seats, swinging towels, flags and banners, and disruptive or nuisance behaviour — this is a school tournament, and the crowd polices itself accordingly. What the rules don’t capture: when a losing team scoops infield dirt into a bag at the final out, the stands go quiet, and you should too. Cheer for great plays on both sides — the neutral crowd is half of what makes summer Koshien feel unlike professional baseball anywhere.
All seats are reserved in 2026, so there’s no gate-rush for position — but the clear-out between sessions on 7–12 August is absolute. A morning ticket does not bleed into the afternoon. Plan the gap: Corowa’s food floors and air-conditioning are just across the station forecourt, which is exactly what they’re for.
Questions worth answering straight
Can I bring my own food into the tournament?
The 2026 official notice bans glass bottles and cans, not food. My bag with onigiri and snacks passed inspection without comment. Pack it in one bag — there are no lockers, and no re-entry if you step out.
Can I bring a PET bottle of water?
The 2026 summer bulletin explicitly bans only glass bottles and cans, and the stadium’s stalls sell PET drinks inside — but unlike Tigers games there is no decanting service, and the bulletin doesn’t spell out PET either way. Carry a soft bottle or flask as backup and follow the gate signage on the day.
What time should I arrive?
All 2026 seats are reserved, so you’re not racing for position. For 8:00 morning sessions, being at the station by 7:15 gives you the walk, the bag check and a margin. The organisers ask afternoon-ticket holders on two-session days not to arrive early — the ground empties completely between sessions.
Is there anywhere to store luggage?
No — the official notice is blunt: no lockers, no baggage room. If you’re between hotels, use a coin locker at a bigger station (Umeda, Namba, Sannomiya) before you ride out, or better, drop bags at your hotel first — see my guide to where to stay for Koshien.
What’s actually worth eating inside?
Koshien curry (¥900 on the official 2026 menu) is the order. The tournament menu pages also list kushikatsu and bento stalls; individual items can pause on given days per the official note. The kachiwari crushed-ice bag is the tradition to hunt for.
Does this guide apply to Hanshin Tigers games?
