ABOUT
The Quieter Side of Japan,
Told by Someone Who Lives It
An independently run travel guide built on firsthand experience, slow travel, and a deep love for the Japan most people never see.
MEET THE CREATOR
Hi, I'm Nobu.
Hidden Japan Gems is a solo project that I run independently. I research, write, photograph, and update everything on this site myself.
My focus is on slow travel — staying longer, walking more, and paying attention to daily life. Instead of rushing between landmarks, I explore how people actually live, eat, and move through each place.
My goal is simple: to help travelers discover a deeper, quieter, and more meaningful side of Japan that guidebooks miss entirely.
What Makes This Site Different
Firsthand Research
Every single spot featured on this site has been personally visited and verified. No secondhand recommendations — only places I've experienced myself.
No Sponsored Content
All recommendations are based on genuine experience. This site is not influenced by paid partnerships, sponsored trips, or ranking deals.
Local Knowledge
With years of living and traveling across Japan, I share insights that go beyond any guidebook — the kind of tips only locals know.
Why Hidden Japan Gems Exists
Hidden Japan Gems focuses on quiet towns, rural landscapes, and everyday places that rarely appear in guidebooks. Each destination is personally visited, observed, and selected for its atmosphere rather than popularity.
My mission is to introduce a quieter, more meaningful side of Japan — small towns, local neighborhoods, and everyday scenes that are often overlooked. I believe travel should be personal, thoughtful, and grounded in local life.
This isn’t about ticking off famous landmarks. It’s about finding the places that stay with you long after you leave.
